84 Wow ZZZQWMZ6Z5 G Zea G. Tefei the periphery of the pad being preferably rounded, for cooperation with an ink transferring roll, designated at 1 1. The roll14: is mounted on the pivoted arms 15 suitably journaled-in the casing 3, said arms being engaged by the spring 16 wherebyto cause the transferring roll it normally to engage the inking pad on the rotary member 5. he transferring roll 14 engages the printing surface carried by the rotary member 5,
which preferably includes a series of circular dies 17 arranged in pairs transversely of the rotary member 5, in the recesses 10. The circular dies are provided with central openings adapted to be engaged by the are shaped support 18, positioned in the cutaway portions 12, and preferably held in place by set screws 19, The circular dies 17 are provided with the various characters necessary for 25) stamping the proper/day, month and year iir 'ionsthe checlg anli are held in their ad justed positions: inany suitable manner, and
preferably, as in the present embodiment,
by means of the spring plates 20 which are mounted on the support 18 and held in locking relation with the dies by means of shoulders 21 which engage the cut-away portions 12. The locking plates are provided with projections 22' struck therefrom, and ar- 90 ranged to engage the depressions 23 formed but are sufficiently yieldable to permit the dies to be moved for adjustment when necessary. A stationary die 2 1 is suitably mounted on the rotary member 5 and is provided with the data that it is desired to I print upon the checks, said stationary die 5 having suitable openings to receive the printing surfaces of the adjustable dies already described. The rotary member 5 is preferably provided with the crank and handle 26, by which the printing mechanism is operated. Access may be had to the interior of the casing 3, for adjusting the movable printing dies, by /means of the hinged cover 27 which is held normally inclosed position by frictional engagement with the casing. The check is held in posit 1' for marking by means of the supporting plate 28 which is suitably securedto the casing 1, and is 155 provided with the extension 29projecting beyond the casing 1 and underneath the casing 3, and provided with an opening for a purpose now to be mentioned. Pivotally mounted on the extension 29 is the arm 30 within which is journaled the roll 31 arranged to project through the opening in the supporting plate, and to support a check while the latter is engaged by the printing surface. The roll 31 is held in yieldable engagement with the printing surface by means of a spring 32 surrounding the post 33 and arranged between a head 34; on said post and the recessed portion '35 of the arm 30. l
In the operation of the parts, the cheek being in normal position upon the supporting plate 28, after'the operation of the marking or protecting devices, ,the handle 26 is moved from its lowered position, shown in Fig. 6', forwardly, upwardly and rearwardly until it has made'a complete revolution, causing the printing surface on the rotary member 5 to be brought into engagement with the check, whereby the latter is stamped for certification. The printing surface is'inked at each revolution by means of the transferring roll 14, which is fed from the ink supplying pad on the rotary member. By reason of the rotary movement of the printing surface, and the engagement of the latter with the roller '31, the check is gripped as it is printed, and'discharged from the machine upon disengagement of the printing surface.
We claim as our invention:
l. The combination with a check protector, of a certifying mechanism carried thereby and comprising a rotary member, an inking pad carried thereby, a printing surface carried by the rotary member, an ink transferring roll adapted for engagement with the printing surface and inking pad, a check supporting plate carried by the protector and extending beneath'the certifying mechanism, and a roll yieldably supported on said plate and adapted to engage the printing surface.
2. The combination with a marking mech-' anism for protecting a check, of a supplemental printing mechanism carried thereby and including a rotary member, an arcshaped support on the rotary member, a series of radiallydisposed dies adjustably mounted on the support supporting means for a check disposed adjacentto the marking mechanism and extending under the printing mechanism, the operation of the printing mechanism serving to eject a check from the machine.
3. The'combination with a marking mechanism for protecting a check, of a supplemental printing mechanism carried thereby and comprising a rotary member, a supporting rod arranged on the rotary member and extending circularly with respect to the axis thereof, and a series of dies adjustably mounted on the supporting rod and disposed radially of the rotary member, the opera tion of the printing mechanism serving to e ect a check from the machine.
4. ,The combination with amarking ,ihechanism for protecting a check comprising 'aplurality of types movable, selectivelym to pr nting position; and a plaj en common iosa1d types, sald platen and types having a relative movement toward and from each other to impress the work; of a supplemental printing mechanism comprising a rotary carrier provided with a plurality of types adjustable thereon; a platen roller for cooperation with said carrier; and means for rotating said carrier and roller in -ontact with each other and thereby simultaneously printing the work and ejecting it from thmachine. I
5. The combination with a frame having a work supporting plate and a (easing overhanging said plate; a type carrier in said casing provided with a plurality of types, said types being movable, selectively, to
printing position; a platen below the plate common to said types, said types and platen having a relative printing movement; of a rotary carrier above the plate provided with a plurality of types adjustably mounted thereon; and a platen roll below the plate, said rotary carrier and platen roll being adapted to be rotated in contact with each other to thereby print the. work and eject it from said slot.
