Abstract

22,550. Chorlton, A. E. L. Oct. 16. Pump valves; concussion, preventing.-Relates to a device for preventing the suction valve of a pump from closing violently on its seat when the stroke reverses. Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement, in which A is the suction and D the delivery valve. The stem of the suction valve is continued into a chamber F, in which it carries a piston G. The cock J, worked automatically by the pump crank, connects the upper part of the chamber F through the tube L with the pressure side of the pump, just before the reversal, so that the valve is pressed quietly down upon its seat. The cock then connects the chamber F through the pipe M to the suction passage. The small passage 0 connects the lower part of the chamber F to the suction passage. The cock is designed, as shown in Fig. 2, to be applied to a three-throw pump. In a modification, the admission of water to the chamber F is controlled by the pump plunger, which is formed with a passage for the purpose.
