STEAM PUMP. No. 433,995. Patented Aug. 12, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRUNO V. NORDBERG, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRUNO NORDBERG COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,995, dated August 12, 1890.
Application filed January 13, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRUNO V. NOEDBERG, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsim have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to steam-pumps, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my device; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 8, Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4, Figs. 2 and 3.
A is the shell of my pump, which is formed with an inlet-chamber a, that is connected with the main chamber B by a valve b. The main chamber is formed with a partition c, that forms part of the cylinder C, an arm D of which extends to one side beneath an outlet-chamber E, with which it communicates through a valve d.
The plungeriF, which is coupled in any suitable way with the plunger of a steam-engine, is fitted in the shell A, through a stupifing-box g, and the piston G is fitted watertight in the cylinder O, which latter at its lower end is provided with a valve-chamber c, which opens from the cylinder to chamber B and contains a rocking valve f, the stem f of which projects out through a stuiiing-box h and is connected by a crank-arm 'L' and strap j with a cross-head K on the upper end of the plunger F, a loop m in the upper end of strap j catching over a pin k of the cross-head to make a loose connection.
The operation of my device is as follows: Suppose the pump to be full of water. Now when the piston G begins its advance or downward stroke it will expel the water from the cylinder through Valve d and out of the pump through chamberE, and suck water into chamber B through valve l) until the pin 7c of crosshead K reaches the lowest limit of loop m, when the pin k will depress strap j, and through arm z' open valve f, and just as soon as valve f is opened an equilibrium will be Serial No. 260,631. (No model.)
established, so that during the remainder of the downward stroke the valve t will be closed and an amount of -luid expelled from the pump equal only to the displacement of the entering plunger, and on the upward stroke of the piston the pressure on both ends of the piston G will be the same and suction produced only to the extent of the area of the plunger F, as it is withdrawn, until the pin 7c, acting on the upper portion of the loop my, lifts strap j and again closes the valves f; or, in other Words, until the piston has completed its backward stroke and is ready to return.
My pump forces only during the first part of the initial or downward stroke of the piston, and hence only when the steam 1s acting upon the steam-piston under pressure, and
then when the steam has been cut off from its vcylinder and can only act expansively the plunger of my pump has only a displacing action.
The valve f should fit rather loosely on its seat, so that it will lift vto permit a slight communication between chamber B and cylinder O before it is opened.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a steam-pump, of a main chamber and a cylinder located therein, a valve opening into said Vchamber from an inlet-chamber and another valve openin g out from the cylinder, a plunger and piston, and
a valve operated by the plunger to open and close communication between the main chainber and cylinder at predetermined points in the stroke of the plunger, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
BRUNO V. NORDBERG. Witnesses:
CHARLES EDWARD SHADALL, S. S. STOUT.
