Description
W. B. WlGLE.
PUMP VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED M'AR. I5, 1916.

TTTED era a name.
WILSON n. WIGLE, or runnnn'ron, CALIFOB PUMP-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wnlson B. WIGLE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, re siding at Fullerton, in the county of Orange and State of California, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Pump-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pump valves, andpertains especially to a standing valve structure. It is a common practice to construct pumps having standing valves of the ball type with a cage having upstanding arms which are disposed in the standing valve, barrel, or the working barrel. This results in reducing the cross sectional area through which liquid passes from the standing valve port to the working barrel and thereby throttles the intake of liquid.
It is an object of my invention to provide a standing valve construction which hasalarge area for passage of liquid between it and the working barrel.
I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a standing valve barrel provided with my improved standing valve structure.
Fig. 2 is a section as seen on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
More specifically, the structure shown herein is adapted to be connected to a liner barrel of a pump, and comprises a standing valve barrel 3 which is threaded at the upper end and is adapted to be connected to the working barrel of a valve piston pump. Extending across the standing valve barrel and adjacent its lower end is a bridge 4: which is comprised of a wall having apertures 5 for the passage of liquid, and a re cess 6 against which a ball valve 7 is adapted to abut when off its seat. The bridge 4:
46 forms a crown for what is in efiect a standing valve cage. I
The bore of the standing valve barrel is reduced at its lower end as indicated at 8.
A bore of enlarged diameter is formed at 9 at so that a shoulder 10 is produced. The en- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30 191?.
Application filed March 15, 1916. Serial No. 84,321.
larged portion 9 is threaded to receive a standing valve ball and seat member 11 i which is formed within the shoulder 12 and is of the same diameter as the body of the barrel 3. The member 11 is tapered at the lower end as indicated at 13, adapting it to be seated in the usual standing valve. Mounted between the member 11 and the shoulder 10 is a reversible valve seat 14 provided with the usual port and upon which the ball valve 7 seats.
With the structure shown herein, upon the upstroke of the plunger 7 lifts from its seat admitting liquid through port 15 and around the valve through the ports 5 to the bore of the standing valve barrel above the bridge which communicates with the working barrel of the pump. The liquid passing around the valve 7 is unimpeded by any obstructions so that the effective area for the flow of fluid about the valve is great as compared with the bore of the standing valve barrel. The ball valve 7 is caged so that it cannot become misplaced. The structure is of a character such that the barrel 3 may be, counterbored below the bridge, and the barrel with the bridge is preferably made integral. The advantages by reason of the simplicity of the structure in the standing valve, and the advantages in operation are obvious.
What I claim is:
The combination includin a tubular casing provided with threade terminals for attachment to a pump barrel and suction tubing, and having a bore flaring to a reduced diameter at the lower end, a perforate bridge extending across the larger diameter of said flaring bore and provided with a valve rest, a valve seat detachably secured to said barrel below said bridge forming with said bore and bridge a valve housing having the entire cross sectional area of the bore between said seat and said bridge unobstructed, and a ball valve mounted on said seat.
In witness that I claim the foregoing T have hereunto subscribed my name this 23rd day of February, 1916.
