"VERNE "W. NOYES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
FUllil P CYLJINDER Wl'l'l-l HEhlhF l/AILVE.
filPECIlFlEUrhTL'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,406, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed February 21, 1898. Serial No. 671,069. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LA VERNE W. NOYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in PumpCylinders with Itelief- Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a pump-cylinder with a relief-valve, my object being to provide an improved construction of pump-cylinder for well-pumps, whereby provision is made for the escape of the fluid from the cylinder when the pressure therein exceeds a predetermined amount.
in well-pumps driven by power-as, for instance, by a windmill-it often happens that the flow of water is checked while the millis still in motion, so that the pumping action continues, while the exit of the fluid through the usual channel is prevented, and in consequence some part of the pumping mechanism is fractured, due to the strain, to permit the escape of the fluid. To overcome this difficulty, l have provided, in accordance with the present invention, a pump-cylinder having at the upper end a relief-valve which may be adjusted to permit the escape of the fluid at any predetermined pressure, the relief-valve being preferably formed in a cap adapted to be secured upon the upper end of the pump cylinder and having a laterally-opening port.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view of the pumpcylinder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the cap carrying the relief-valve. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof. Fig. t is a view of the port and under face of the valve. Fig. 5 is a view of the valve. Fig. 6 is a view of the washer or packing of the valve.
Like letters refer to like parts in the several figures.
The pump-cylinder a. is illustrated as provided at the lower end with a cap h, to which is secured the tubing 0, the cylinder carrying at the upper end a cap cl, to which is secured the tubing e, which extends to the surface.
At the bottom of the cylinder is a valve a, and within the cylinder moves the piston f, carrying the valve f, the piston being carried upon the lower end of the piston-rod f The wall (Z of the cap d upon one side is flattened to form a seatfor the valve g, which is adapted to seal the port 19, the valve havinga facing or packing g. A series of pins g g are provided in the face of the valve and extend into the port and rest against the walls there of to form guides to direct the valve in a right line movement as the same is moved away from its seat. The valve carries a projection to hold in place the end of the coiled spring h, which is interposed between the valve and the plate d, which is cast integral with the cap d. The operative parts of the valve are thus all situated within a channel or recess d extending laterally through the cap, and the wall of the cap which carries the port and forms the valve-seat is inset, so that it occupies a position within the circle which would otherwise constitute the bore of the cap, 6r, in other words, the flattened wall is a chord of the circle which forms the bounding-walls of the remainder of the here. By this construction the area of the bore may be made as large as the area of the bore through the tubing 6, so that the cap does not impede the flow of the water, while this construction results in a very compact valve which does not have an objectionable lateral dimension.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a pnmp-cylinder, and a well-tube, of a piston in said cylinder and a pump-rod situated axially in said cylinder and tube, and a cap or coupling interposed between said cylinder and said tube having a bore the cross-section of which has substantially the area of the cross-section of the well-tube and having one wall of the bore of arc shape and the other wall plane or fiat and forming a chord of the are and situated in close proximity to the pump-rod, a port provided in said fiat wall, and a springpressed laterally-movin g valve norm ally sealing said port, substantially as described.
2. A coupling or cap having a bore the wall of which on one side is of arc shape and upon.
the other side formed plane or flat and forming a chord of the are and having the inner face thereof situated in close proximity to the center about which the arc is circumscribed, a port passing through said flat wall, a valve sealing said port, an abutment formed inte gral with the body of the coupling and laterally removed therefrom but within the exterior diameter of the same and a spring interposed between said abutment and said valve, [0 substantially as described,
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two wit- LA VERNE W. NOYES. \Nitnesses:
W. OLYDE- J ONES, M. R. ROCHFORD.
