LANDRUM. H. PELPHREY, OF GIRARD, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF FOR-TY-FIVE ONE- HUNDREDTHS TO U. G. PELPHREY, OF MULBERRY, KANSAS,
INLET-VALVE CASING.
Application filed October 21, 1919.
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, LANDRUM H. PELIH- an a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Girard, in the county of I W" I crawford and btate 01 Kansas have invented new and useful Improvements in Inlet- Valve Casings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide means in the nature of a protector for the inlet or 'i'eed end of the suction pipe 01": a pump of the type'us d in connection with drainage work in mines and adapted to be used. in lieu of a globe valve and also of a check valve and strainer for preventing the induction of solid objects into the suction pipe of the pump.
Furthermore it is the object to provide a device for the purpose indicated which'can be constructed at comparatively small costand which will operate automatically in teeding the pump, maintaining itself in proper relation to the surface of the water in the mine and dispense with the services of a helper or pump man ordinarily employed in this connection.
further objectsand advantagesoi the invention will appear in the course oi the fol lowing description of a preferred embodiment, it being understood that changes in term and proportion may be resorted to within the scope or" the claims without departing from rne principles involved.
In the drawing:
Figure is a side view of the feed nozzle.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
ihe casing of the device preferably comprises the detachable coupling member 10 and strainer member 11, the former of which is provided with a threaded terminal 12 for engagement with the end of the suction pipe of the pump (not shown) while the latter is connected with the former by a threaded joint 13 produced y forming an exteriorly threaded collar 141- on the strainer member to engage a corresponding opening in the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Serial No. 332,352.
the pump which acts obviously in the direc tion indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. The stem 17 the valve extends through the valveseat and a guide 18 at the outer side of the strainer member for attachment to a loat 19 by which the valve is normally held closed and the casing maintained at a proper depth in the water in which it is submerged.
' 'lhelioat serves obviously to hold the eas- :111 in an upright position with the perforated wall of the strainer uppermost and near the suriiace oi the water so as to avoid the induction of solid matter near the bot- 7 the outlet of the casing, and a float connected with tie valve for normally maintaining the same seated in opposition to the direction of suction through the casing.
2. A protector for the suction pipes of pumps having its casing provided at the inlet end with a screen and at an intermediate point, between the inlet and outlet ends with a valve seat, and a float actuated check valve mounted for seating movement in a direction toward the inlet end of the casing.
3. A device for the purpose indicated havin casing provided with detachable coupling and strainer members of which the former is provided with means for engaging a suction pipe, and a float actuated valve movable in the direction of flow through the casing and seatable toward the inlet end thereof, the stem of said valve extending through and beyond the strainer end of the casing. v
1. A device for the purpose indicated having a casing comprising detachable coupling and strainer members of which one is provided with a threaded collar for engagement with a corresponding recess in the other, a
valve seat being provided in said collar and a guide being provided in the strainer member in axial alinement With said collar, and a float actuated valve for engagement with said seat and adapted to close in Opposition to the flow of liquid through the casingend having its stein extended through said guide, thestminei' member being provided with liquid inlet epeniiigs in the portion of 10 its wall between said coiler and guide.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. LAN DRUM H. PELPHR-EY.
