20,510. Mertens, M., and Frowein, O. Sept. 19. CardB,punching.-'Verdol cards are punched by a series of punches 8 fitted within apertures in a beam 7 and a vertically-movable bridge-piece 9. The punches are actuated by needles 10, which pass through guide-plates 11, 12 and are normally held in their raised positions by springs 14. The card blank passes over rollers 4 mounted on parallel shafts 3, and is supported during the punching operation by a table 6. A travelling carriage 13, fitted with wheels 47 which run between rails 48, 49, carries the plate 12 and also a cylinder 43, within which is a spring-actuated piston, formed with grooves 28 to receive a number of horizontally sliding pushers. These pushers are connected to sliding bars actuated by means of a keyboard, so as to move any desired pusher over its corresponding needle 14. The piston-rod 16 is connected by levers 17 and a link 19 to a lever 20 mounted on a shaft 21, which can be locked by means of a rachet-wheel 26, pawl 25 pivoted to the lever 20, and a three-armed lever adapted to throw the pawl into or out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel. The three-armed lever is connected by a rod 41 to a lever 39, which is rocked by means of levers 37 carrying a bar 36 arranged to be depressed by the keys 32. When a key is depressed, the lever 20 is, in consequence, released, and the piston is forced down by its spring 27. After the punching operation, the piston is returned by means of a weight 43 supported by a pulley keyed to the shaft 21, the ratchet-wheel having been temporally held, during the punching process, by a pawl, on the three-armed lever ; the extent of movement of the lever is limited by a set-screw. The carriage 13 is traversed, after each punching operation, by a rack 51 and pinion 50 secured to the shaft 21.
