16,890. Lowdon, A. H. July 30. Computing scales.-The scale shown in Fig. 1 is used in connection with a hinged foot rule to ascertain the pitch of screw propellers. As shown in Fig. 2, one limb of the foot rule is laid on a blade B at any convenient distance X in feet from the axial line of the boss C, and the other limb is set parallel to the face of the boss. The span D of the foot rule then reads the pitch from the scale, which bears a series of linear graduations corresponding to different distances from the axial line.
