Abstract
24,761. Bayldon, F. J., and Armstrong, A. H. Nov. 23. Bearings, instruments for determining; course indicators.-The apparatus is more especially for solving the trigonometric problems involved in determining a ship's bearings and course, the distance abeam it will pass from a given point &c., but it is applicable to other calculations involving the solution of triangles and quadrilaterals, such, for example, as the determination of strains and stresses by graphic statics. The base-board X of the apparatus is marked with a protractor A having a base B, perpendicular C, and two radial pointers D<1>, D<2>. A cross-bar E, parallel to the base, slides in dovetailed guides A<3> and carries a second protractor F upon which may be adjusted a doubleended pointer G. A rule H is linked to the pointer by bars H<1>, H<1>, so as to remain always parallel with it. All the linear scales are graduated alike, and set-screws are provided to lock the bars and pointers in any desired positions. The arrangement described provides four relatively-adjustable elements, and so enables triangles or quadrilaterals to be solved. I, J are clock faces with adjustable hands, and K a scale with adjustable pointers for registering any data required to be remembered.
