Abstract

9874. Anderson, E. D. April 29. Lighting gas.-In a gas lighter, a catalytic or igniting substance D is preferably supported by a carbon block C carried by a spiral B, the end B' of which passes through straps A' formed by crossslitting the supporting-casing A and bending the intermediate portions outwards. The casing A consists of half a cylinder and a spring tongue A<1> depending from a cylindrical part A<3> surmounted by a cap A' having a slit A<5> for the passage of the flame. A projection A<6> on the cap limits the inward motion of the spring arm B<2>, which moves outwards as the spring is expanded by heat transmitted from the flame. In a modification, the slit A<5> has a narrow central portion, with upwardlyprojecting lips to control the shape of the flame, and wide end portions to admit air. The end of the spiral is attached to the casing in a plane at right-angles to the slit, and its free end is twisted so as to present its edge towards the casing. Threads impregnated with the igniting-substance are carried by an eye in a tongue at the bottom of a sleeve closed at its upper end and carried by the reduced end of the spring.
