This invention relates to improvements in electric ignition devices for gas-burners; and

To enable the invention to be fully understood, I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 to 3 are front views of an incandescent gas-burner provided with a suitable form of my novel electric igniter, the said figures showing the gas-tap and sparking contacts in different positions, as herein.- after described, Fig. 4 is a side view thereof, the parts being in the same position as in Fig. 3; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are sectional planviews showing the gas-cock plug in the positions corresponding to those in Figs. 1,
2, and 3, respectively.
A is the main gas-burner, and a the plug of the gas-tap, the said plug being extended rearwardly through the body at the end opposite to that having the handle or thumbpiece I), the projecting end having a neck 0,
to one side of which is fixed a metal wire d, the end of which terminates in several coils e, inclosing the pilot-tube f. The rod dis secured in the neck 0 at a point such that when the handle I) of the plug is turned fully on the said point d is at the top of its path.
Above the pilot-tube is placed a springcontact g, which is fixed at h to an insulated portion of the device. This spring-contact is connected by the wire 1' to one of the terminals of the source of electricity. The body of the device, and consequently the wire 01, is connected to the other terminal of the source of electricity. The upper upper end of the spring is advantageously curved toward the burner-tube, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the burner is turned off and the gasplug is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1,' the upper bent end at of the wire (1 is above the upper end of the pilot-tube f. If now the tap b be manipulated so as to first open the passage conveying gas to the pilot-tube f, the rod 01 is moved by the-plug and rises at the same time, sliding up the pilot-tube f. The upper bent end 01 of the rod then comes into contact with the spring g, slides up the same, and springs off its end, thereby forming a disruptive spark, which ignites the gas issuing from the pilot-tube f. This flame will be communicatedto the gas issuing from the main burner, which will be ignited at the moment when the parts are in the position indicated in Fig. 3, and the passage of gas to the pilot-tube f is cut ofi. By continuing to turn the cock-plug the flame is regulated without igniting the pilot-flame. It will be seen by reference to Figs-1, 2, and 3 that as the plug is turned the movement of the eccentric connection 01 of the movable contact will cause the upper portion of said movable contact to turn laterally with respect to and upon the pilot-tube. Therefore in the further movement of the plug beyond the position indicated in Fig. 3 for the purpose of regulating the flame of the main burner A the movable contact will be drawn downward, thereby swinging it still farther around the pilot-tube and out of operative relation to the stationary contact 9. Therefore the two contacts will not be brought together when the plug is being moved through this portion of its half-circle of movement,
and the flame of the main burnerA can therelel with the main burner in a vertical plane.
The result of this is that the device can be applied to burners with a gallery at some distance from the cock. It will only be necessary to increase the height of the pilot-tube and to elongate the wire dd d". This elongation will in no way modify the reciprocal relations of the parts, and the spark will always be produced at the same moment without the gallery interfering with the operation.
Another advantage consists in the fact that the spark is produced exactly at the point desired to ignite the gas issuing from the pilot-tube, since this spark is always produced at the same point exactly above the pilottube.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that What I claim is- 1. The combination of agas-burner, a pilottube for lighting same, a fixed contact having a part adjacent to the ignition end of the pilot-tube, a movable contact constructed to simultaneously slide vertically and oscillate upon the pilot-tube and having a part for engaging the fixed contact, a gas-tap for controlling the said bnrner and pilot tube and a connection between said gas-tap and the movable contact having an eccentric connection with said tap, substantially as described.
