2635. Cockburn, G. Feb. 1. Safety-valves; alarms, high-pressure.- A compound safety-valve for steam generators working under high pressure is shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the tubular valve A normally rests on a feat A' in the casing C, and the upper end forms a seat for the auxiliary valve B. Both valves are closed by the pressure of the spring H or by a dead-weight load, and, as the weight of the valves is balanced by an adjustable counterweight J on a lever I engaging with the tubular valve, an excess of pressure lifts both valves and steam escapes at the outlet E. Still greater pressure then lifts the auxiliary valve, and the subsequent discharge into the atmosphere acts as an alarm.
