Abstract

26,030. Marolf, J. June 3, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Rudders.-A spare rudder E, for use in the event of the main rudder A being disabled or carried away, is so mounted immediately forward of the main rudder that the main rudder may be used ordinarily without interference from the spare rudder. The lower ends of the spare and main rudderposts e, a are respectively socketed at b<1>, b in the rear end of the keel B, and the upper ends of the posts pass through the hull and respectively terminate below and above the deck D. The spare rudder E has its lower edge extending into, and normally locked by, a recess b<2> formed in the keel, and also has its rear edge normally locked by engagement with bifurcated guides J on a post K. To bring the spare rudder into use, it is raised to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and is secured in the raised position by passing a key H through or into an opening h in the rudderpost e. The recesses e<3> in the rear edge of the rudder E then register with the guides J, so that the rudder may be turned in either direction about a vertical axis. The keel B is shown cut away at L to provide space for a screw propeller.
