Abstract
23,864. Jones, W. H., and Jones, B. H. Nov. 25. Metal, sheet, seaming and joining.-Relates to a method of attaching the necks or covers of metal bottles or other similar articles of irregular shape, in which an inside tool cannot be used. The edge of the neck or cover B is formed with an annular channel B<1> of inverted U-shape, and the body C of the vessel is formed with an outwardly-turned edge or flange C<1>. The flange C<1> is placed within the channel B', as shown in Fig. 3, and the outer edge of the channel is turned over the flange, as shown in Fig. 4. The single seam so formed is then turned down by a hammer or press against the side of the vessel, as shown in Fig. 5, thus forming double seam. During the last-mentioned operation, a suitable stake or tool D is placed behind the seam, to give the necessary resistance.
