Abstract
190,119. Koppers Co., (Assignees of Shaw, J. A.). Dec. 8, 1921, [Convention date]. Sulphur.-Gases such as coke oven gas are purified from hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen cyanide and other impurities by treatment with the solution of an alkali such as sodium carbonate which is then revivified by passage over an iron compound having an affinity for sulphur such as iron oxide or basic carbonate. The gas passes upwards through a scrubber A in which it is treated with a solution of sodium carbonate which passes by a pipe 4 into a sump 5 from which it is delivered through a pipe 6 and sprayed on to ferric oxide in filters B the oxide being laid on a filtering bed composed of pebbles of graduated sizes and sand. The regenerated solution is pumped along a pipe 10 to a tank 11 from which it is supplied again to the scrubber A. The iron oxide absorbs the sulphur from the alkali solution and is revivified by air supplied from a pipe 14 and branch pipes 15.
