Abstract

19,202. Horrocks, J. Sept. 26. Winding-machines.-Relates to rack-and-pinion gearing for converting rotary into reciprocating motion, applicable for traversing the thread-guides of thread - winding machines. The segmental pinion 4 mounted on the upper end of a spindle geared to the main driving-shaft of the thread- winding machine, gears alternately with two racks formed in a frame 5, fitted to work to and fro in guides and coupled to the thread carriage. The invention consists in cutting away portions of the length of the teeth of the racks, at the ends at which they come into gear, and in stepping the pinion to correspond, so that the front face 4<c> of the leading tooth of the pinion is able to move into gear with the tooth a of the rack without first coming into contact with the other teeth ; similarly, the tooth 4<d> gears with the shortened tooth b, and so on. This construction ensures a rapid reversal of the reciprocating piece. This action is facilitated and shocks are reduced by the use of buffers ; buffers 6, 7 carried by the slide abut at the ends of the stroke upon opposite sides of a fixed bridge 9<b>; other buffers 10, 11 in the form of rollers act in conjunction with a similar buffer 12 mounted eccentrically on the pinion. In a modified arrangement, the buffers 6, 7 are carried in an extension at the end of the slide.
