Abstract

12,394. Varley, J. June 1. Rollers and roller heads; roving and thread guides.-In spinning, winding, and like machines, the thread guides are reciprocated, to prevent grooving of the rollers, in such a manner that there is a quick reversal of the traverse mechanism and that the point of reversal is constantly changing. The sliding piece b, Fig. 4, attached to the bar c carrying the thread-guides, slides on the hub a<1> of the cam a, and two projections b<1>, b<11> bear on points on the surface of the cam diametrically opposite to one another. The cam is of such a shape that a quick reversal is obtained and that the projections b<1>, b<11> are always in contact with its surface. The cam is mounted loosely on an eccentric portion d<1>, Fig. 11, of the shaft d and is driven by a pin on a worm-wheel working in a slot in the cam. The wheel is mounted loosely on the portion d<11> of the shaft and is driven by a worm m, which also drives a second wheel, with slightly fewer teeth than the worm-wheel, and fixed to the portion d<11> of the shaft side by side with it. The worm-wheel drives the cam and so produces the reciprocation, while the second wheel turns the eccentric on which the cam revolves at a slightly different rate, and so ensures that the point of reversal shall constantly change.
