Abstract
553,834. Winding machines; bobbins. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Dec. 4, 1941, No. 15666. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1940. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] In a yarn or like winding machine having a rotary winding spindle and a traverse member reciprocating the thread guide longitudinally of the spindle, means are provided for shifting the thread guide outwardly and inwardly on the traverse member in the direction of traverse alternately to increase and decrease the length of traverse of the guide during the reciprocation of the traverse member such alternate increasing and decreasing of the traverse of the thread guide being uniform at both ends of the stroke of the guide throughout the winding of a package on the winding spindle. As shown the thread y is traversed by a thread guide 40 carried from a traverse rod 23 reciprocated by a cam on the shaft 7 in a guideway 35 in a traverse frame 25 supported on the shaft, the rod 23 carrying a slide 41 mounted on the back plate 32 of the frame 25. The guide 40 is fixed to one arm of a bell-crank lever 45 pivoted on the slide 41, the other end of the lever carrying a pivoted block 60 engaging a slot 57 in a cam track 55 pivoted on a stud 56 in the back plate 32; the track 55 is pivoted to a bar 65 carrying a bowl 90 engaging a cam 66 rotated through bevel wheel and sprocket gearing from a shaft 77 driven by worm gearing from a shaft 83 driven from an idle pulley 15 of the spindle-driving means. By these means the bar 65 is slowly reciprocated and causes the position of the track 55 to be changed during each traverse of the rod 23, the thread guide 40 being rocked inwards and outwards alternately to reduce and increase the traverse of the yarn which is then laid on the cylindrical core on the winding spindle 6 in helical turns disposed at varying angles throughout the winding and with the traverses of the yarn alternately increasing from a minimum extent to a maximum extent and diminishing from the maximum extent to the minimum extent continually throughout the winding; the mass of yarn laid on the core is of relatively small thickness compared with the diameter of the core. The thread guide is formed from wire bent to form a narrow yarn-engaging loop 50 offset from one limb of a loop 49 by which the guide is secured to the lever 45, lugs 47, 48 on the lever being bent over the limb of the loop 49 and an offset portion 54 of the loop snapping into place between the lugs 47; the free end 52 of the loop 50 is bent at an angle over the offset 51 between the loops and provides an opening for the entrance of the yarn into the loop 50 while the offset 51 prevents the yarn escaping therefrom. A series of winding spindles are driven by a belt 11 which passes around a pulley 13 on the motor shaft 14, around idler pulleys 15, 16, and under jockey pulleys 17 which bear against the belt to maintain it in contact with the pulleys 12 on the spindles 6. Moistening troughs 100 may be arranged below the winding heads, the rollers 102 dipping into the liquid in the troughs being carried by a shaft 101 driven by sprocket gearing from the shaft 77.
