Abstract

1,138,365. Winding yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 April, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 19628/65. Heading D1J. A yarn winding machine of the kind having a reciprocating mechanism 10 for the yarn traverse guide 23 comprising a cylindrical rotatable drum 12 having a continuous helical cam groove 13 formed in the cylindrical surface thereof, the guide 23 being carried by a cam follower 21 to reciprocate in a linear direction by engagement with at least one stationary rail 17 or 18 extending substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the drum 12; a reciprocatable member 19 comprising the guide 23 and the follower 21 and being rotatable between two operable sliding positions at each reversal of its reciprocal movement, is characterized in that the member 19 has a spacing portion. 22 which is positioned between the follower 21 and a portion 20 sliding over the rail 17 or 18, is adapted to be a close fit between the rail 17 or 18 and the drum 12 and is in the form of a tangent to the latter. The drum 12 is located in a housing 14 to which the rails 17, 18 are secured along each side edge of a slot 16. At each extremity of the helical part of the groove 13, the member 19 of moulded plastics material is rotated through an angle equal to twice the lead angle of each helical part at that point. Preferably, the portion 20 is generally rhomboidal in shape, the follower 21 is circular, rhomboidal or boltshaped and the portion 22 is generally cylindrical. The guide 23 is in the form of a notch 24 cut in a laterally-extending tongue. A lubricating liquid, e.g. mineral oil, forms a reservoir into which the drum 12 dips in the base of the housing 14 to distribute the oil to the relatively moving parts. A passage 27 is formed in the rail 17 for this purpose. Splash guards 28 are provided on the rails 17, 18. The plane mutually-engaging surfaces of the portion 20 and the rails 17, 18 may be formed with a V-shaped slot in each opposing pair of these surfaces to reduce friction therebetween.
