Abstract

14,178. Spalart, G., and Schenk, H. July 11. Gas and like engines.-The engine is suitable for motor cars, and its power is varied by holding open more or less the exhaust valve. The cylinder has cast with it cooling-rings, and it is held on to an aluminium crank casing by a yoke 4 and screw 7 which bears on the cover 3. The cylinder is cooled by two fans 38, which force air through conical openings on the crank chamber. The shaft 16 that drives the half-speed valve shaft 19 has a ball-ended crank-pin 14, which works in a hole in the main crank-pin 10. The exhaust valve 21 is operated by a cam 20. Its closing-spring 25 is placed as shown to avoid heating. A block 31 is moved into the path of the valve spindle by a rod 33 operated by the driver and attached to a link 28 pivoted to the rod 27. The exhaust valve has a removable seating 35, in the form of a cage which is secured by its sleeve 34. The admission-valve case cover is secured by a lever 36.
