Abstract

11,281. Loomis, W. J., and Karcher, A. A. June 1. Engines with two or more cylinders working on one crank; valve gear.-Relates to an engine especially suited for automobiles. The engine has two pairs of single-acting cylinders 3, 4, 5, 6 mounted on a casing 1, furnished with bearings for a double crank shaft 2, with the axes of one pair of cylinders at right-angles to those of the other pair. The pistons of opposite cylinders are connected to the same crank. Distributing slide valves 19 are mounted in casings at the outer ends of the cylinders, one valve for each pair of cylinders. These valves are actuated through bent levers 23 by a variable-throw crank on the shaft 2, adjusted for starting, stopping, or reversing by means of a sliding collar 28.
