Abstract

4835. Francke, W. J. March 2. Valves and valve gear. - The valve comprises a rotating sleeve which is moved axially by the governor to v a r y the cut-off without altering the lead. Fig. 1 shows the valve applied to a two-cylinder single-acting engine. The sleeve F forming the valve works over a fixed sleeve G through which steam is admitted by ports g<1>, g; it passes through a port f<1> in the valve and oblique ports h in the liner H to the cylinder. The exhaust escapes by the passage h<1> and port I. The valve is driven through a clutch d' and arm f by bevel gearing secured by a set-screw d<3> for altering the lead. Fig. 4 shows a double-acting engine, and in this case there are two rotating sleeves F<1>, F<2> forming the valve, with a steam-admission sleeve G<1> between them, which moves in an axial direction with them but is prevented from rotating by a pin k. The ports f<1>, g are also oblique ; f<3>, f<4> are the exhaust ports.
