Abstract

7743. Williamson, T. H. April 15. Propelling and steering submarine boats.-The hull is cylindrical with conical ends and is propelled by four screws arranged in the manner shown and driven by a pair of motors 19, 39. The steering is effected or assisted by the propellers, either pair of which can be stopped. Hinged plates 20 at the sides can be operated to stop or steer the vessel. Each is connected to a rack bar 21 in gear with a pinion driven by one of the motors 19, 39. The submersion of the vessel is controlled by water ballast, which is admitted to the compartments 23, 24 through valves 25, and is pumped out through pipes 29. The vessel can also be raised or depressed by suitably positioning the horizontal rudders or fins 30.
