MARINE PROPULSION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,613, dated January '7, 1896. Application filed February 28, 1895. Serial No. 540,006. (No model.)
which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a convenient and useful stern propeller for vessels, and to make its casing serve also as a rudder by which the vessel may be steered.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical section giving a front view of the casing or paddlebox, the paddles, and the mechanism for operating them. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the dotted line 0c of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section showing the steering and driving mechanism, and Fig. 4 a detail view showing how the paddle-box is middle-pivoted to the stern of the vessel. Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the disks.
In the drawings, A represents the paddleboX pivoted at its middle to the middle of the stern of a vessel so as to be vibrated laterally. It is connected near each end by hooks and eyes or other equivalent device with a vesselchain B passing over vessel-pulleys O and around a Windlass D, the latter being provided with alever-handle d to turn it. By this means the paddle-box may be moved to either side, so as to steer the boat in any desired direction.
II are disks arranged to turn on or with the idler-shafts F journaled in the sides of the box A and connected with disks E on a revolving shaft I by means of the cranks G, to whose wrists are pivoted the paddles J, the latter being preferably four in each compartment K, while in the space between the compartments K K is journaled a shaft carrying the spurwheel L. The latter meshes with a spur-wheel M on the revolving shaft I and also with a drive spur-wheel on the drive-shaft O of the vessel, said drive-shaft being rotated by any suitable mechanism and motive power, as the paddles, which also revolve on their own axes. This causes the paddles J, which are preferably rectangular and provided with reinforcing-ribs, to pass below the revolving shaft I and to enter the water with the lower end foremost, while in coming out of the water the upper end is foremost, thus causing the paddles to be submerged and to exert their full force against the water between the disks while they are relieved from all counter-pressure. The peripheries of the disks E are brought in con tact with the opposite grooved rollers P sup- 7 ported in the hangers p to prevent the vibration thereof.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In marine propellers, a paddle-box pivoted to the stern of a vessel and having two compartments separated by an intermediate space, in combination with a shaft carrying the disks E E and spur-wheel M; two shafts carrying the disks H II; cranks G connecting said disks E-I'I and provided with wrists pivoted to paddles; and a shaft carrying a spurwheel L to mesh with the spur-wheel M, the said wheels L M being between the compartments K K as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
ANDREIV HOLM.
