Signals, reply or tell-tale; telegraphs, mechanical. - Relates to alarm apparatus of the kind described in Specification No. 3878, A.D. 1900, for use with engineroom telegraphs &c., an alarm bell being rung so long as the order transmitted is not complied with. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the " ahead," " stop," and " astern " contacts d, d<1>, s, s<1>, and n, n<1> on the telegraph dial, and of the contacts D, S, N adapted to be engaged by the pointer 2 on the reversing-shaft 3, the circuit of the bell b being completed except when the pointer 2 corresponds in position with the pointer 1. The present invention provides for the operation of the alarm when it is preferred to stop by closing the stop valve, instead of handling the engine entirely by the reversing-shaft. For this purpose, two additional contacts 4, 5 are mounted on the dial, concentric with the " ahead " and " astern " contacts, so as to be engaged by the contact 7<1> on the pointer 1. The stop-valve spindle 6 is provided with contact-springs &c. v, which connect with the contact o when the valve is open, and with the contact c when the valve is closed. The pointer 1 is connected to the spindle 6 or the contacts v instead of to the generator g, the other connections being as shown. When the stop valve is open, the bell acts as above described, while, when the valve is closed, the bell circuit is completed when the pointer 2 is in either the " ahead " or " astern " positions, but is broken when the pointer is on the " stop " contact S. For differentiating in respect of different degrees of speed, the supplementary apparatus shown in Fig. 2 is employed. The full-speed contacts 8, 10 are connected to the contact 13, which is engaged by the springs &c. v<1> on the stop-valve spindle when the valve is in the slow-speed position, the slow-speed contacts 9, 11 being connected to the contact 12 corresponding to the fast-speed position of the valve. The contacts 8, 9, 10, 11 are arranged around the dial in conformity with the corresponding orders, and are engaged by the pointer 1<1>, the bell circuit being completed when the valve spindle is not in the position corresponding to the order. This arrangement may be extended to apply to more than two speed rates.
