Abstract

18,200. Kennedy, D. Sept. 8. Signals, marine and ship.-The spindle of the transmitter in a ship's telegraph, or the wire or chain of the telegraph, is provided with contactfingers a, which, when the transmitter is moved to the 'ahead' or 'astern' position, make contact with the corresponding one of the two contact-plates c, c<1>, so completing an electric circuit e, d, or d, f, through a bell h. Each of the circuits e, f passes through a pivoted contact-lever i<1>, and the lever in the circuit closed by the operation of the transmitter is opened to stop the bell only when the order is correctly carried out ; otherwise, the bell continues to ring. In the arrangement shown, the levers i, i<1> are operated respectively by the collars or projections j, j<1> on the ordinary tell-tale wire k, which is actuated from the engine shaft l &c. When there is no tell-tale, a dummy wire may be provided. In lieu of the arrangement shown, the levers may be operated by studs on the shaft l, or insulated arms on the shaft may be adapted to open contact-springs in the bell circuits. A visible indicator may be employed in addition to the bell. The system may be extended to provide for any desired number of different orders, and may also be used for steering-telegraphs.
