Abstract

Engine-controlling gear, signalling position of. - The reversing-gear of a marine engine operates a valve I to connect the main steam supply pipe H, on the engine side of the throttle E, to one or other of two pressure indicators K, K<1> on the bridge, the other indicator being connected to atmosphere. Steam is also admitted to one of two cylinders M, M' to close contacts O or O<1>, so that a bell signal circuit is completed over contacts P, R, P<1>, O<1>, or P<2>, R<1>, P<3>, O if the position of the reversing-lever is in disagreement with the order telegraph A, B. Alternatively, a whistle alarm X, Fig. 2, may be used, the admission of steam to the whistle being controlled by the valve I operated by the reversing-gear, and the valve U operated by the order-telegraph rod C.
