Abstract

12,334. Wilke, J. F., and Boomkens, A. M. J. May 24. Code - signalling mechanism; ships' course signals.-In a rotating sound-signalling device, the sound - producing means is controlled so as to be effective or not in accordance with the direction in which the device is pointing. A whistle, siren, or the l i k e A, preferably mounted in a sounddirector B, preferably of paraboloidal form, is rotated manually, or mechanically by means of a crank D<3>, through the gear - wheels D, D <1>. On the shaft of the latter is mounted a cam-disk E, the projection E<1> of which moves the lever F, so actuating the valve A<6> in the supply-pipe A<4> of the compressed air, steam, or other gaseous operating-fluid for the siren A. The signal given consists of a blast directed to the starboard side while the device is rotating from ahead to astern, an interval of silence during a complete rotation, and then two blasts, directed to port, while the device is rotating from astern to ahead, separated by an interval during a half-rotation. A distant observer can tell from the sounds heard which side of the ship is towards him, and then, bv measuring at what part of a blast it sounds the loudest, the angle made by the vessel's course and the line between them. An indicator comprising a graduated disk is then set so that the line corresponding to this angle points towards the source of sound, whereupon the zero line shows the course of the ship. The valve A<6> may be thrown out of action and signals may be given manually by a stop-valve A<5>, a by-pass being provided if desired. Similar apparatus with distinctive signals may be used on piers or headlands.
