Abstract

9964. Walker, J. H. April 30. Signals, marine and ship.-Relates to steam or air whistles and their operating-mechanism, for use as fog signals on steam or sailing vessels, to indicate the position of the vessel and the direction in which she is moving. The apparatus is controlled by the hand-lever 33 on the bridge &c., which is moved so that the pointer 34 on the same shaft 13 indicates on the dial 32 the position of the binnacle compass 30. According to whether the pointer is turned to east or west, the arm 36, Fig. 1, by engaging the notched arm 37, turns the shaft 28 of the hollow valve plug 20, Fig. 4, also towards east or west, and so opens the port 21 to the pipe 24 of the deep-toned whistle 25, or the port 22 to the pipe 24 of the shrill-toned whistle 26, these whistles respectively indicating easterly or westerly courses. The valve 20 is in communication through the pipe 18 with the interior of the casing 10, Fig. 2, of the hollow valve plug 11 on the shaft 13. The valve plug 11 has two ports 12, 12, the former of which is put in communication with one or other of the four ports 9 of the branch pipes 8 accordingly as the pointer 34 indicates NNE, ENE, ESE, or SSE, and the latter of which is put in communication with the same ports when the pointer indicates the corresponding westerly courses. The pipes 8 are connected to the ports 6 in the casing 2 of the hollow valve plug 3, which is formed with one port 3', two ports 3<2>, three ports 3<3>, and four ports 3<4>, corresponding to the positions of the ports 6. The plug 3 is rotated by clockwork &c. 16, and is supplied with steam or compressed air through the pipe 5. Thus, when the ship is on an easterly course, one, two, three, or four blasts of the whistle 25 are sounded in regular succession according to the course that is being steered, the whistle 26 indicating in the same way the westerly courses. The number of ports may be multiplied, and more than two whistles may be used.
