4880. Strickland, F. March 7. Motor road vehicles.-Comprises two-speed and reversing toothed gear. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the frame of the balance gear j<1> is furnished with two toothed rings h, i of different diameters gearing with two pinions c<0>, d<0>, one of which is fast on the short shaft c and the other fast on a sleeve d which is loose on the shaft c. Either pinion can be driven from the motor shaft a by a sliding clutch member e. When it is desired to reverse, the clutch e is brought into its middle position, and is made to drive the sleeve d through toothed rings e<2>, d<2> and an idle pinion g, which is temporarily brought into action. In a modification, the application to a motor mounted on the vehicle axle in the manner described in Specification No. 1709, A.D. 1900, is shown ; in this case, spur gearing is used instead of bevel gear.
