Abstract

4023. Sch÷n, L. Feb. 25. Stoppers.-Relates to stoppers or closures for the inlet and outlet apertures of receptacles containing volatile inflammable liquids, such as spirits, ether, benzene, carbon bisulphide, &c. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to the outlet a of a sheet metal cask. The outlet is provided with a neck made in two parts c, d, which are screwed and soldered together after a diaphragm f of wire gauze, or finely perforated sheet metal, has been interposed between them. The outlet passage g in the neck is opened and closed by means of the screw-down valve h, which may be protected by a screw cap j and a seal x. The outer end of the neck d is screwed both externally and internally, and is normally closed by the correspondingly threaded cap and plug stopper k, Fig. 3, which has a packing washer m in the annular recess between the plug l and the rim of the stopper. When discharging the contents, the stopper k is replaced by a similar stopper w, Fig. 1, provided with a spout n, which is also fitted with a discharge neck c, d, having a diaphragm f. Fig. 2 shows a can in position to receive the liquid from the cask. The inlet and outlet of the can are fitted with necks c, d, having diaphragms f, and adapted to be closed respectively by the stoppers k, v, Figs. 3 and 4. The diaphragms are preferably cupped, as shown, in the direction of the flow of the liquid, their circumferential flanges serving to permit the passage of displaced air. The diaphragms are adapted to prevent the liquid in the receptacles from becoming ignited, in case of the accidental ignition of the liquid or vapours being emptied or issuing from the storage receptacle &c.
