Abstract

23,499. Blamires, J., and Robinson, J. P. Dec. 22. Loom stopmotions; shuttles.- A stop-motion, for automatically stopping a loom before complete exhaustion of weft, comprises a hammer lever A, carrying an electromagnetic coil B, which forms part of a circuit including a battery M and two contactplates d, d' on the shuttle-box. The shuttle E is provided with two external contactpieces e<1>, e<2>, which make contact with the plates d, d<1>, when the shuttle enters the box. The piece e<1> is electrically c o n - nected with the shuttle tongue, which carries a projection f, arranged to make contact when the weft is nearly exhausted with a spring-controlled feeler e<3>. The weft fork C is attracted so as to engage with the hammer lever and is actuated in the ordinary way. In a modification, the feeler is held out of contact with the cop, except when the shuttle is in the box, by a lever, which is depressed as the shuttle enters. In another form of stop-motion, an ordinary shuttle, without contact-pieces, is employed, an electric circuit, including a coil, arranged in the same way as the coil B, Fig. 1, being closed by means of a feeler mounted upon a vertically-reciprocating rod, and arranged to strike against the cop. When the weft is nearly exhausted, the feeler rises sufficiently high to cause a contact-maker to strike against a terminal screw in the circuit. A stopmotion for use in stopping a loom, after any desired number of picks, comprises a series of cards carried by a card cylinder and provided with projections set at the desired distances apart and arranged to release, by means of mechanical or electrical connections, a latch which is mounted on the weft-fork slide and is normally held out of contact with the hammer lever. The cards may be formed with apertures, instead of projections, engaging with a pin carried by a lever forming part of the mechanism for releasing the latch. When the loom has been stopped, borders may be woven, the shuttle being actuated by hand for this purpose.
