Abstract

16,454. Reixach, J., Preece, E., and Scott, H. July 25. Loom shuttles; stop-motions; shuttle - changing mechanism; weft supply, in(licating failure of; bobbins.-Loom shuttles and the parts connected therewith are provided with means whereby, when the weft is about to fail, an electric circuit is completed, and the loom is stopped, or shuttle-changing mechanism is brought into operation, or other indication is given of the approaching failure of weft. The shuttle-peg spring B has a bent part, which lies in a slot C' in the coned end of the bobbin C, and normally presses against the weft on the bobbin. The weft is wound in such a manner that, before complete exhaustion of the weft, the slot C' is uncovered, and the spring B comes into contact with a metal cross-pin H, which is in electrical connection with a metallic plate on the side of the shuttle. A similar plate is in connection with the peg pivot-pin D and stop-pin K, so that the two plates become electrically connected. When the shuttle enters one of the shuttle boxes, the plates on the shuttle come into contact with insulated springs er plates on the inside of the box, and an electric circuit is completed through an electromagnet mounted on the knocking-off handle. The magnet armature is pivoted on the knocking- off handle, and, when the magnet is energized, an extension of the armature is brought into the path of a stud fixed to the lay, so that, when the beatup takes place, the knocking-off handle is moved out of its notch and the loom is stopped. When the knocking-off handle is moved, the circuit is broken, through two spring contact-plates on the handle being withdrawn from between two fixed spring contact-plates. In a modified arrangement of the shuttle and box, a spring fixed to the box replaces one of the plates on the shuttle. This spring normally presses against the weft covering the slot C' when the shuttle is in the box, and, when the slot is uncovered, the spring makes contact with a shoulder formed on the shuttle peg. In another arrangement, a spring carried by the shuttle and connected to one of the plates on the side, enters the uncovered slot and makes contact with a cross-pin connected to the other plate. In another arrangement, a spring feeler is fixed on the base of the shuttle peg, and presses along the bobbin against the end windings of weft covering the slot, When the end windings are run off, the spring comes into contact with a pin or bar fixed to the shuttle, and completes the circuit. All the arrangements can be used to operate mechanism to change the shuttle, or otherwise call attention to the approaching failure of weft.
