Rail joints; sleepers; chairs; gauge, adjusting.- A short beam or sleeper 3 is placed under the railway sleepers 5 at the joint, and holds them by diagonally-placed clips 4 pressed from opposite edges of its top flange. The rail 2 is secured to the sleepers 5 by the chair plate 8, which has diagonally-placed clips 12 for engaging the rail flange, and similarly-placed clips 13 for engaging the top flange of the sleeper. Lugs 7 on the chair engage in the diagonally-placed notches 6 on the top flange of the sleeper, so that the chair may be set to any gauge, and the chair is secured when turned to embrace the rail and sleeper by a bolt through the inclined or other slots 14, 9 in the chair and sleeper. The clips 8 may be turned over projections on the side of the chair, or may be stamped out of the plate.
