To all whom it may concern 3e it known that I, EDGAR M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Anticreeping Railway -Rails, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object so to construct a railway rail as to prevent it from creeping, without requiring the use of separate attachments, commonly known as anticreepers.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention. and of its object and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which is a side elevation of a fragment of a rail supported upon a tie and tie-plate and embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 2 represents a railway tie and 6 a railway rail above the tie. In the preferred arrangement there is interposed between the rail and the tie a tieplate, 8. In accordance with my invention Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the rail is provided on its under side with a short downward projection, 7 adapted to engage with the edge of the tie-plate, where a tie-plate is employed. This projection is preferably made by pressing or rolling the base flange downwardly so as to form an abrupt depending shoulder as indicated at 9.
With this arrangement the ballast may be brought flush with the top of the ties without interfering with the laying of the rail, no excavation of the ballast being necessary as where the ordinary anti-creeper is used, and no special form of tie or tie-plate being required.
I claim:
1. A railway rail having a portion of its base flange pressed vertically to form an abrupt depending transverse shoulder adapted to engage with the side of a tie or tie plate.
2. In combination, a railway tie, a tieplate upon the tie, a railway rail resting upon the tie plate, and an abrupt depending transverse shoulder on the under side of the rail engaging with one of the side edges of the tie plate.
