Compound fabrics.-A fabric applicable as a substitute for leather, for trunks and other articles, is made by forming fibrous material such as raw hemp into bands a, with the fibres laid longitudinally or twisted together, and connecting these bands by weaving in transverse wires b, preferably of steel and flat. The fabric thus formed may be consolidated by impregnation with a solution of glue or other suitable material, and pressed. Sailcloth or other woven fabric, leather board, or thin leather, may be pasted on it, preferably on both sides.
