Abstract

Tear resistant sheet material which is resistant to the incidence of porosity comprises an elastomer-impregnated fabric of open weave having ground ends and picks of synthetic non-cellulosic long-chain polymeric material reinforced at intervals by threads of greater tensile strength and having fibrous cellulosic warp threads interposed between the synthetic non-cellulosic warp threads of the ground ends. The fibrous cellulosic warp threads may be interposed between each of the synthetic non-cellulosic warp threads, and may have a finer count than the synthetic non-cellulosic warp threads. The reinforcing ends and picks may comprise groups of warp and weft threads. Reinforcing threads may be provided by periodic ends and picks of greater tensile strength than the synthetic non-cellulosic ends and picks, the reinforcing ends and picks preferably being respectively of groups of warp and weft threads. The sheet material may be prepared by coating the open weave fabric with a layer of an elastomeric composition, compressing to flatten the projections where the reinforcing threads overlie each other and subsequently coating with a further layer of elastomeric composition. The synthetic non-cellulosic long-chain polymeric material may be a polyamide, e.g. 6.6. nylon, or a polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate. Cellulosic warp threads may be of staple fibre such as cotton. The elastomer composition may be applied to both sides of the fabric, preferably in several layers, and may contain natural rubber, e.g. butyl rubber.ALSO:Non-porous tear-resistant sheet material consists of an elastomer-impregnated fabric of open plain weave having ends and picks of nylon 66 or polyethylene terephthalate reinforced at intervals by weaving two ends as one and two picks as one, thin cotton warp threads of greater crimp alternating with the synthetic warp threads. Each cotton end weaves as one with the synthetic end on one side of it, but passes through the same dent of the reed as the oppositely-shed synthetic end at the other side of it.
