Incandescent gas &c. lamps. - Mantles, formed with closed upper ends, in the manner described are stated to give increased light owing to the temporary confinement of the heated gases within the mantle, and are sold before incineration, which may be subsequently performed by an unskilled person. The mantle A, prepared in the usual manner, is turned inside out, and the upper end of the mantle is gathered and firmly bound by a thread c, which has been impregnated with refractory oxides, to the inserted loop of a piece of looped and knotted asbestos or other incombustible cord B, as shown in Fig. 1. The mantle is then turned right side outwards, as shown in Fig. 2. The turning up of the lower edge e of the mantle facilitates the shaping and incineration thereof, although such turning up is not necessary.
