Abstract

4173. Cameron, D., Commin, F. J., and Martin, A. J. March 5. S e w a g e, treating ; bacteriological p r ocesses; settling; sewers, treating in; tanks. - Relates to means for removing solid matters from sewage on its way to the outfall, so as to reduce the amount of pumping necessary. A septic tank or tanks are arranged as high as possible in the course of the outfall sewer, and grit chambers may be used for separating the heavy solids. The solid matters, separated from the sewage in the septic tanks, are acted upon in the way described in Specification No. 21,142, A.D. 1895. Any available source of power may be employed for raising the sewage, such as a heat engine using the gases generated in the septic tanks. The work may be performed by a pump or by means of air compressed by an engine, or by a direct jet of steam, or by the pressure of steam upon the sewage, or by steam used in an injector. In some cases, the sewage from a low-lying area may be raised by means of that from a higher district, a jet pump or other suitable hydraulic apparatus being employed. Deposits are withdrawn from the tanks by means of slotted pipes, as described in Specification No. 23,042, A.D. 1896. The deposits may be removed automatically by the means shown in section in Fig. 2. A pipe 2, provided with a valve 3, connects the slotted discharge pipe 4 with a collecting-chamber 1, which communicates, by means of a pipe 5 and valve 6, with the septic tank, or chamber 7 communicating with the tank. The chamber 1 may be fitted with a cover. A current of air, caused by the combustion of gas from the septic tanks, may be employed in ventilating the sewers.
