Abstract

125. Whitney, T. J. Jan. 2. Feedwater, controlling and heating.-Relates, principally, to valve apparatus for controlling automatically or by hand the supply of feedwater through a heater to the boiler in accordance with the varying level of water in the boiler. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a float in a chamber 18 in communication with the boiler operates a small slide valve controlling the distribution of steam to a cylinder in the casing 6. The piston in this cylinder operates a larger slide valve controlling the admission of feedwater to the heater 2 and its passage therefrom to the boiler. Means are provided for operating both valves by hand when required. The heater is shown separately in section in Fig. 21. It consists of a chamber 77 within a casing to which exhaust steam is admitted. When the level of water in the boiler is high, water is admitted by the apparatus above described to the heater. When the level falls below the normal, the supply of water to the heater is cut off and the heater is put in communication with the boiler both above and below the water level, so that the water in the heater runs into the boiler by gravity. In a modified arrangement, the whole operation is controlled by a single multiple-way plug cock operated by hand. Means are provided for removing oil from the exhaust steam in the casing of the heater and for withdrawing it for re-use. Means are also provided for removing deposited impurities from the heater.
