Abstract

23,123. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. Nov. 20. Formyl-, benzoyl-, and ethoxycarbonyl-phenylglycocoll-o-carboxylic esters are produced by heating phenylglycocoll-o-carboxylic dimethyl or diethyl ester with formic acid in a closed vessel, or with benzoylchloride or chloroformic ethyl ester on a water bath. The formyl and benzoyl derivatives are extracted from the mixture by ether. The ethoxycarbonyl derivative remains in an almost pure condition after washing the melt with dilute sodium-carbonate solution. It boils without decomposition above 360‹ C. Dyes, artificial.-The foregoing new acyl compounds are converted into indoxyl by boiling them with caustic alkali of about 20 per cent. strength with exclusion of air, or with caustic potash, milk of lime, or baryta water ; or by allowing them to stand with these reagents. The condensation is effected by metallic sodium, sodium alcoholate, ammonia, or hot sodium-carbonate solution. If fuming sulphuric acid containing 4 per cent. or more of sulphuric anhydride is used, the condensation is accompanied by oxidation and sulphonation, indigo sulphonic acid being formed. This is precipitated by addition of salt to a solution of the melt in water.
