Dyes, artificial.-Indoxyl and indoxylic acid are prepared by evaporating in vacuo either an aqueous solution of a mixture of an alkali-metal salt of phenyl-glycocoll-o-carboxylic acid with caustic alkali, or a mixture of the said two compounds in the presence of water. and then further heating the mixture to 200‹ or 250‹ C. until the formation of the indoxyl or indoxylic acid ceases. The yield is about 90 per cent. of that theoretically possible.
