Couplings, disconnectible; leaks, stopping.-Rods, shafts, pipes, &c. are recessed to receive a key c inclined at both sides, as shown in Fig. 1, and the joint is surrounded by a sleeve a consisting of two sliding dovetailed parts, as shown in Fig. 2. The key c may be supplemented by a key having the inclines in the opposite direction ; or the key c may be.dovetailed at each end, or be provided with projections. In the case of pipe couplings, such as for closing a burst or split pipe, the key may be dispensed with. The two parts of the sleeve may also be flanged and bolted together ; or the sleeve may be cylindrical.
