Abstract

11,595. Hudson, W., [Young, L.]. June 5. Rafts.-Relates to the use of the deckhouses, upper decks, bridges, and other upper works of ships as rafts. Fig. 2 shows a half cross-section of a raft slightly raised above the deck. The bottom and sides consist of water-tight compartments E, E, some of which may be used for the storage of water, provisions, valuables, masts, sails, &c. Bollards or pins C projecting from the deck enter sockets D, and prevent lateral or endwise movement of the raft. Normally the raft is prevented from rising clear of the pins by levers engaging chains attached to the deck, which levers, when required, are disengaged by hand to leave the raft free to float away should the ship sink.
