LIFE-BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3,1914;
Application filed May 13, 1914. Serial No. 838,287.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jozsnr BIIION, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Coal Center, in the county of lVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life boats. l
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a life boat with hinged outrigger floats adaptable when folded for supporting the boat in an upright position upon the deck.
A further object is to provide an outer ledge or hinged gunwale extending entirely around a life boat and provided with hand hold portions and also being downwardly foldable in a supporting position for the boat.
A still further object is to provide opposite outriggers hinged to a life boat and completely encircling the same when horizontally positioned and adapted for hinged movements during the rocking of the boat in the water and utilized as supporting brackets when the life boat is positioned upon the deck of a ship.
lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a boat provided with the present invention, the folded positions of the outriggers being illustrated in clotted lines. Big. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of an end portion of one of the outriggers detached.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the life boat 10 is illustrated as provided with oppositely-positioned outrigger floats or boards 11 swingingly connected to the exterior of the boat by means of hinges 12 located at the point of the normal water level of the boat. lVhen the boat is positioned in the water, the outriggers 11 are adapted to float upon the top of the water and to be normally positioned in a single plane with the adjacent ends 13 of the separate outriggers abutting each other as illustrated in Fig. 1, and at which times the triangular blocks 14: positioned upon the tops of the outriggers and the exterior of the boat act as braces or stops for the outriggers and prevent any excessive upward movement of the outriggers upon their hinges. Hand-hold bars 15 are positioned lmigitudinally upon the outriggers and on the upper outer edges thereof between the brackets 14. r i
It will be seen that with the life boat in use, the outriggers will assist in supporting the boat in the water by reason of their buoyancy and will slightly move upon the hinges 12 during the rolling of the boat and thus tend to maintain the equilibrium thereof.
It is obvious that the boat may be pro pelled in any desired manner, for instance, by means of oars (not shown) but adapted to engage the oar locks 16 positionable in sockets 17 upon the opposite gunwales of the boat.
WVhen the life boat is stored away or positioned inoperative upon the deck of the ship, the outriggers 11 are positioned as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and thus support the boat by engagement of the edges of the outriggers with the deck. This position of the outriggers is at once assumed thereby when the life boat is elevated, as the outriggers will then freely swing downwardly upon their hinges 12 to such posi tions, and are slightly inclined inwardly beneath the boat. The width of the outriggers or boards 11 is substantially equal to or slightly greater than the normal draft of the boat or in other words, the vertical distance between the hinging points of the outriggers and the plane of the bottom of the keel when the boat is horizontally positioned, is substantially the same or slightly less than the width of the outriggers, and thus insuring a support for the boat when said outriggers are turned downwardly. The hoisting of the life boat over the side of the ship into the water allows the outriggers to assume their floating positions as soon as the boat is positioned in the water.
lVhile theforms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
/Vhat I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a life boat, two oppositely-positioned float boards hinged in a single plane to the exterior thereof and completely encircling the same when the boat ispositioned in the water, triangularshaped spaced brackets upon the upper faces of said boards adapted for limiting engagement with the boat sides, longitudina1ly-positioned hand rails upon the upper edges of said boards between said brackets, the width of said boards being substantially equal to the draft depth of the boat.
2. In combination, a life boat, bow-shaped Outriggers hinged to the opposite sides of the boat at the normal Water line thereof and in 'a single plane parallel to the plane of the gunwales of the boat, the width of said Outriggers being substantially equal to the distance between the plane of the outrigger hinges and the plane of the bottom of the boat keel parallel to said plane of the hinges, limiting triangular stop brackets JOZSEF BIHON.
