9903. Tessier, E. May 10. Stuffing-boxes.-Relates to stuffing-boxes which permit of slight oscillations or lateral movements of the piston-rods passing through them. Fig. 1 shows two similar arrangements. The box C bears by means of the collar b upon the movable ring c and upon the socket ring E, similarly to a valve upon its seat, ensuring a joint while permitting movement, and is fixed in the interior of the box or recess B formed in the cylinder cover. The gland D for compressing the packing may be tightened up by the screw cap F or by studs g and nuts i. External springs r are provided. For stuffing-boxes of condensing-engines, circular or spiral springs are arranged in recesses so that the casing of the box C is drawn outwards to keep it to its seat.
