In a locomotive boiler, a firebox of ordinary construction is fitted with downwardlyinclined water tubes a, Fig. 1, through which pass smoke tubes c. The tubes a open into a front header b, which is connected by circulation tubes f to the lower part of the firebox. A bridge or baffle g is fitted in the firebox, and the gases which do not pass through the tubes c escape through the opening e and circulate over the outsides of the tubes a. Fig. 3 shows a boiler adapted for marine use. The fire-gases first heat the exterior of the tubes a, and then pass through the inner tubes c to the smoke-box. Dampers o, p allow the gases to be passed directly to the ohimney, without going through the inner tubes.
