Coking.-A batch of coking-ovens of the CoppÚe type is shown in section in Figs. 1 and 2, the central left and right end portions of Fig. 1 being respectively taken along lines C D, A B, and E F, Fig. 2, and the left and right @and portions of Fig. 2 being respectively taken along lines P Q, R S, Fig. 1. Each coking-chamber A is provided on each side with two sets of heating-flues arranged symmetrically with respect to a partition wall s, Fig. 2. Air for combustion passes along a main channel b into two branch channels c, and along passages d into a chamber e communicating by means of passages d<1> and vertical channels with heating-chambers f beneath the coking-chambers a. The heating-chambers f are provided with baffle blocks and with partition walls f<1> serving to increase the length of path of the air, before it passes upwards into combustion chambers h immediately beneath the coking - chambers. Gas is admitted to the chambers h by nozzles h', and the flames thus produced pass along flues i into heating-flues k, where a second supply of gas is introduced through pipes k<1>; the flues k on both sides of the coking - chambers communicate by means of flues r<1> in the oven roofs. The products of combustion flow from the heating-flues k along flues l, m, n, o, p into the chimney flue q. When the ovens a are being warmed up, they are put in communication with the heating-flues and flue q by removing the firebricks x, Fig. 1, and closing the flues t for the products of distillation.
