Abstract

19,501. Riley, J. Sept. 14. Locks, key.-Relates to locks for boxes, desks, and the like, the improvements being also applicable to sliding bolt locks. Staples B<1> on a plate B fixed to the lid enter the lock case A, and are engaged by lever hooks a, a<1>, pivoted at b, b. A spring d urges the levers into the locked position. Cam-pieces f, g, pivoted at e, e<1>, are acted upon by the key to withdraw the levers into the position shown in dotted lines. The key-pin i<2> is fixed to a plate i which slides in guides and is normally retained in the position by a spring catch i<1>, Fig. 4. The key x, Fig. 5, has an inclined ward x<1>, which disengages the catch i<1> when the key-bit is turned into the vertical position. The plate i must then be slid downwards by means of the key until it reaches a stop, when, on turning the key further, the bit engages the cams g, f in turn and unlocks the levers, which are relocked by a reverse operation. A pin or other ward is placed in the way of the bit. The stem of the key is narrowed, to allow it to pass down the keyhole. A similar arrangement may be used with one lever to operate a sliding bolt.
