Abstract

Lathes.-Relates to automatic lathes for cutting bars of wood, bone, &c. into knobs, buttons, rosettes, balusters, chair and table legs, posts, etc.; twisted and polygonal w o r k may also be produced. The work R held in the chucks h<1>, h is rotated by the wormwheel I and fed lengthwise through the stationary chuck h by the sliding piece f<1> operated by a half-nut f with handle f and a feed-screw f<4>. The chuck carriage H is mounted on the bed-plate G which can be reciprocated in the direction of the shaft i. The cutter L fixed to the shaft l has its bearings fixed to the bed-plate M, which can also be reciprocated in the direction of the shaft i, either automatically or by hand. Thus the rotating cutter can be reciprocated laterally while the work can be rotated and moved longitudinally and transversely. The mechanism for producing these motions is preferably as follows :-The worm-wheel I above-mentioned is rotated by a worm on the shaft i connected to the main shaft a by bevel gearing. The feed-screw f<4> is rotated by a worm-wheel S, worm on shaft a<9>, and change gearing operated by the shaft a<7> connected to the main shaft a by bevel gearing. The bed-plate G is reciprocated by connecting- rods F<1> and cranks F on a rock shaft a<3>. An arm E fixed to the rock shaft bears against a cam D on the shaft a' connected by the change gearing c<1>, c, C to the main shaft a. The cutter L is rotated by the pulley N, and the cutter carriage bed-plate M is reciprocated by cams &c. on the shaft a<10>. This can be rotated by hand by the hand-wheel K, or more slowly by the hand-wheel P on the shaft a<11> carrying a worm for the worm-wheel k. The shaft a<10> can be rotated automatically by a worm on the shaft i gearing with a worm-wheel k<1>. The worm-wheels k, k<1> can be put in and out of gear with the shaft a<10>.
